See what technology MFPS uses to conduct investigations and assist home owners and organizations in documenting phenomena.

4 channel DVR
4 Channel DVR with 750GB hard drive. This device along with 4 IR cameras allows MFPS to capture video in low and no light situations. With onboard ethernet capability we can retrieve or view recorded video for analysis after an investigation. Each camera will be placed in hot spots through out the house or building and cabled back to a head end where real time recording and review can take place.

Tri-Field EMF Meter The Tri-Field EMF meter made by AlphaLab Electromagnetic Instruments has been a solid performer in the field of paranormal research. It's 3-axis detection of EMF allows for accurate linear field readings. This device is a great tool for discovering high levels of EMF in and around building structures which has been known to cause biological effects in some people. EMF is a non-ionizing type of radiation. It is also possible to measure a paranormal event, a theory that when an entity is trying to manifest itself it pulls energy from the surrounding area. This drain on the energy causes an EM field that can be measured with these instruments.

ZAP Checker
Zap Checker - This device has incredible sensitivity for discovering radio frequency interference. It is not an EMF detector but rather an RF (Radio Frequency) detector. We use this device to check the surrounding areas for strong radio frequencies that can interfere with other electronic devices. It has been documented in some paranormal cases electronic devices turning on/off or behaving in a strange manner. Strong RF fields can be responsible for these events.

Tri-Field Natural EMF Meter
This Trifield Natural EMF meter is made by AlphaLabs Electromagnetic Instruments. The meter is sensitive to changes of as little as 0.5% of the strength of the Earth's magnetic field, and the tone will sound whether the field increases or decreases. This meter is good for detecting natural sources of EMF while ignoring man made sources such as AC power, wiring, electronic devices and etc. Technically this meter is better equipped to detecting the presence of an entity, however it should not be relied upon for every hit on the meter being paranormal activity. Detection of paranormal activity must be validated from many angles of the investigation process and not just a simple meter reading.

ExTech 42515 IR Thermometer The Model 42515 IR thermometer measures and displays non-contact (infrared) temperature readings up to 1472F. The built-in laser pointer increases target accuracy while the backlit LCD and handy push-buttons combine for convenient, ergonomic operation. The Type K thermocouple input provides contact measurements up to 2498F. This meter is good for surface temperature changes which allow MFPS to understand how well insulated a structure is. Although not the best tool for detecting cold spots it compliments the ambient temperature meter.

ExTech IR301 Model IR301 is both a IR non-contact and Stem temperature meter. It allows for simultaneously measuring of both ambient temperature and surface temperature. This meter is great for detecting cold spots and at the same time referencing the surface temperature.

Sony DCR-HC62 MiniDV The Sony DCR-HC62 MiniDV is a great small handheld video camera that has Super NightShot Plus technology that lets you shoot color video in total darkness. These cameras are used during investigations to document the investigators experiences and capture any evidence for later analysis. We usually try and provide 1 per investigator.

Olympus DS-61 Voice Recorder The Olympus DS-61 HQ digital voice recorder has exceptional recording capabilities including a high quality stereo (2 channel) microphone which allows MFPS to obtain CD quality recordings with spatial directional separation utilizing the HQ stereo microphones. Having 2GB of memory it can record in ST XQ mode (Highest Quality) for 33 hours and 50 minutes. Lowest quality can record 530hrs and 50min. MFPS uses this technology for investigations, EVP work, Interviews and etc.

GE 35383 Mini Cassette MFPS uses this GE 35383 mini cassette recorder for EVP work. The benefits to using an older analog recorder for EVP work is it provides a better background noise from the tape hiss which is much like white noise. It is believed that white noise provides a medium for spirits to use for communication. By using both digital and analog together we can analyze the differences and sometimes come up with interesting results.

External Microphones

External microphones. MFPS uses several different types of external microphones to record sessions. We use omni directional, unidirectional and shotgun mics according to the type of investigation.

Cobra PR-4200 GMRS Radios MFPS uses Cobra PR-4200 GMRS/FRS 2-way radios for communications between team members. These radios provide 38 CTCSS privacy codes and 83 DCS privacy codes. This allows for a total of 121 privacy channels that MFPS uses in situations where privacy is of the up most importance. Without this type of technology ease dropping and interference could cause problems with an investigation.

Luxeon Flashlights Luxeon LED flashlights. We use various types and sizes of luxeon LED flashlights with red LED's or red filters. We like them because they provide long lasting clean white light and night vision red when needed. This makes it easier to see small numbers and color labels on some instruments and gauges plus helps investigators maintain their night vision when using the red filters. We also like them because they are much tougher than bulb flashlights. If you drop them, they have a better survival rate.

MFJ-888 Frequency Counter The MFJ-888 is a small portable frequency counter that covers 10Hz to 3GHz. This device is mainly a backup for the Zap Checker. If heavy radio frequency is detected on an investigation we sometimes use this to determine the device or source by discovering the frequency. This then allows us to identify the interference that may be causing electrical phenomena.

Monitor 4 Geiger Counter The Monitor 4 detects Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and X-radiations. These are all ionizing types of radiation. While light is a component of solar energy, the sun also emits a constant stream of highly charged particles that shower the Earth everyday with X-Rays, Gamma Rays, Cosmic Rays, Alpha radiation etc. These high energy particles interact with the atmosphere and the Earth's natural magnetic field causing phenomena such as the Aurora Borealis also known as the Northern Lights. It is theorized that paranormal entities may utilize these types of charged particles as a constant source of energy. MFPS will sometimes obtain a background radiation level at the investigation site to determine if this type of energy may have played a role in the activity experienced.

Power Inverter Another handy device we bring along on our investigations is a 500 watt DC to AC inverter. This allows MFPS team members to plug in various devices that require AC power when AC power is not available. This works by using the vehicles battery system to convert the 12V DC to 120 AC. Several of these will accompany an investigation.

Sony MVC-CD1000 Digital SLR The Sony MVC-CD1000 digital SLR camera. This camera records images directly to installed 3.5 inch recordable CD's. It's a great tool for investigations and produces some amazing images. It's built in popup flash and relative position to the lens may help reduce orbs which MFPS believes that 99% of them captured on images are dust, pollen, moisture and etc.

Sony DSC-W50 Digital Camera The Sony DSC-W50 is an ultra thin digital 6.0mp camera with some impressive features. ISO: 80-1000, Shutter: 1-1/2000 with image resolutions of: 2816x2112, 2816x1872, 2048x1536, 1920x1080, and 1632x1224. It is a great tool because it can be used with one hand while carrying another instrument in the other.

Canon G10 Digital Camera MFPS uses the Canon G10 for it's ultra high resolution images. It's 14.7 Megapixel CCD captures details that are elusive with smaller megapixel cameras. The G10 also offers EOS performance in a small package with a dazzling array of features and modes including night shot modes and a dedicated AE compensation dial. It also has the new DIGIC 4 image processor which increases dynamic range in images to bring out previously unnoticed detail in dark areas, like shadows without blowing out lighter areas. It's RAW image capture mode allows for uncompressed recording of images that helps in photo evidence analysis.

Green Laser Pointer We occasionally use a green laser for atmospheric disturbance detection. Lasers provide a clean coherent light source with great intensity. This light source fired into a room can detect even some of the smallest particles in the air around you. It does this by refraction and/or reflection. Theory states that an entity trying to manifest itself pulls energy from the surrounding atmosphere. Light is energy and an absence of light would create a dark mass. In theory if the entity passed through the beam of coherent light technically it should scatter particles or even absorb them and you would instantly see a change. This device is also good for looking at air particle density, it can easily show particles in the air which may at times lead to orb formation in still camera photos.

Sony HDR-UX10 HandyCam

The Sony HDR-UX10 is a full 1920x1080 HD Handycam that has hybrid recording. It supports both DVD-DL and 16GB Pro Duo memory stick recording. We also use this connected to a laptop computer to stream and record full HD quality video. This video camera has stunning clarity and has Super Night Shot technology which is 16 times more sensitive in 0 Lux than the typical Night Shot on most camera's.

This helps take some of the guess work out of captured evidence. We feel that many older video capturing technologies may not provide the resolution needed to accurately identify activity in video evidence. The move to HD recording may help in this area.

MEL-8704 Vibe

The Mel-8704R-Vibe ProNavigator is one of the newest meters in a great line of paranormal investigation tools. We recently received one of these meters from Pro-Measure and have used this in the field several times with great success.

This meter features all of the original qualities of the MEL-8704 but with enhancements and an added vibration sensor that has incredible sensitivity to vibration and movement but surprisingly controllable with a bit of experimentation on surface placement. The meter also features a new Red backlit LCD display for night vision and also incorporates a bright Red LED flashlight.

We have used this meter on one case to help detect bed movement and also used in another case to assist in capturing footsteps heard in a hallway. We would like to use several of these meters in the future to line up and down hallways and corridors to help assist in capturing these type of paranormal events. MFPS recommends this meter without hesitation.

MEL-8704 KII

The MEL-8704R KII Hybrid combines the style of the original Mel-8704 with a KII EMF Meter. This meter is actually 2 meters in one with enhancements such as Glow in The Dark buttons, Red Backlit LCD, Red Flashlight and more!

After receiving this meter from Pro-Measure we promptly put it to use in the field. The unit performed very well and the KII had great sensitivity. Both meters can be used simultaneously but we recommend using only one at a time to get a more accurate reading for logging scientific data.

As always, these meters live up to the name. They function well, are build solid and backed by a reputable company. Looking forward, the company continues to be innovative and advance this line of meters breaking through boundaries and developing technologies for paranormal investigation and research. MFPS recommends this meter without hesitation.

Pro-Measure Mel-8704

The Mel-8704 was specifically designed for Paranormal Investigators. This device allows simultaneous measurements of EMF levels and ambient temperature using a K-Type thermocouple. It also has a Super Bright backlit display with larger LCD numbers to make reading quick and easy. It also has a record feature that obtains min and max values for later analysis.

Update: Our experience with this meter in the field has been great so far, the unit has performed perfectly and has allowed us to obtain measurements of both EM field disturbances & ambient temperature fluctuations. The tripod is handy during EVP sessions, you can setup the 8704 and your audio recorder and still take notes at the same time. The multi angle tripod allows you to orient the sensor in the unit towards the area you suspect a disturbance to be.

Paranormal Investigator Tools We could not show a photo of this yet but we will in time. Eric Haney has been working on a device that uses a 670mh Magnetic induction coil coupled to a multi stage darlington paired amplifier with 60hz noise filter reduction. Additional processing circuitry is involved but not listed at this time. A set up headphones is connected to the unit which allows the investigator to listen to EMF and subsequently possible EVP activity in real-time.

Paranormal Investigator Tools

Indigo Systems Omega ThermoCorder is an excellent tool for paranormal investigation. This small but versatile thermal imaging camera can mount to a Sony MiniDV hand held camera or be used on a tripod with our DVR systems.

We use the thermal imaging camera to help us identify and record possible apparitions of an entity. Most ghosts or entity's will produce a cold spot that can be measured with handheld IR thermometers and also be imaged with a thermal camera.

Zoom H2 The Zoom H2 360 audio recorder is another versatile tool in our arsenal. This recorder will simultaneously record 4 tracks of audio from the 4 microphones that are positioned in the front and rear of the unit. It also records in many high resolution uncompressed broadcast WAV formats which helps reduce noise during playback. We can also analyze the audio levels of the front and rear audio tracks to help determine where the sound may have come from. Essentially, this recorder will evening pickup sound from a 360 degree pattern around the room where it is being used.

WS210 Recorder These small Olympus WS-210S recorders are low cost and work great for capturing EVP's. We have many of these and each team at least carries 1 with them at all times. We have been able to capture more EVP's with these recorders than any of our other higher end audio recorder due to the lack of EM shielding and plastic housing which we believe allows an entity to better interact with the electronics of the unit.

ION Pump

Negative ION Pump - This negative ION generator produced 400uA of negative ION's in a continuous stream. It is not pulsed but constant DC producing more ION's than other units in its class. The theory is that negative ION's will charge the air in a room or area you are conducting paranormal research or an EVP's session allowing the entity to use that energy to manifest itself or communicate more effectively.

We use these devices in situations where we feel there is an entity present and is trying to communicate. By operating this device, we may be able to help the entity make this contact by giving them the enrgy they need.
